At St George’s Preparatory School, we inspire a love of learning by combining academic excellence with creativity, character development and a strong sense of community. Our curriculum encourages enquiry, resilience and ethical awareness, preparing pupils to thrive not only in school but in life beyond.
With small class sizes averaging around 16 pupils, our teachers can focus on each child’s individual journey. This close attention allows them to respond to personal learning needs, build confidence and nurture curiosity across every subject.
Our staff know each pupil as an individual, understanding their interests, strengths and areas for growth. This insight allows us to provide tailored support, challenge our most able students, and guide everyone to achieve their personal best.
We use varied teaching methods to cater to different learning styles, ensuring steady progress for all. Specialist support for those with additional needs and enrichment opportunities for high achievers are integrated seamlessly into school life.
Beyond academics, we foster physical, social and moral development, encouraging pupils to become kind, responsible, resilient members of the community who achieve the best possible outcomes for themselves and others.
Information on the academic performance of pupils in the preceding school year is available upon request from the school office.
Curriculum Overview
St George’s prepares children for secondary schools both on and off-island. We follow the UK National Curriculum and Jersey Curriculum developing pupils academically and pastorally for their next setting. We prepare all children for CATs (Cognitive Ability Tests), which are used by the selective island secondary schools, as well as for the ISEB Pre-Test, for those looking to continue their education at an independent secondary school in the UK. St George’s is a non-selective, nurturing environment with strong academic success. Our fabulous grounds, small class sizes and low pupil-to-teacher ratio help us to provide individualised, holistic learning opportunities for all children.
We provide high-quality teaching and a wide range of opportunities to suit all. The children have Forest School, Swimming or PE every day. Specialist teachers deliver high-quality lessons including Performing Arts, Music, Science, French and Spanish. Children also benefit from a range of topic days when we all come together to celebrate a particular topic or event, for example Liberation Day or farming in Jersey.
“We pride ourselves in preparing children for life. St George’s pupils leave us well-educated, well-rounded and resilient. They are confident in themselves and, most importantly, respectful and kind to others. Former pupils look back on their time at St George’s with a sense of nostalgia and often a desire to do it all over again. We are proud of the young people our pupils become. We are proud of the education we provide.”

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
At St George’s, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), including Reception, is built on the belief that children learn best when they feel happy, safe and secure. Emotional wellbeing and involvement are at the heart of everything we do, and we work closely with families to ensure every child feels confident, valued and ready to explore. Guided by Birth to 5 Matters, we recognise that each child is unique, developing at their own pace with learning shaped around individual interests and needs.
Our curriculum is rooted in the EYFS principles and the Characteristics of Effective Learning, supporting children across the prime areas of Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development and Communication and Language, alongside the specific areas of Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. Learning takes place through a balance of purposeful play, exploration and carefully planned adult-led activities.
In Reception, children begin their formal learning journey while maintaining the creativity and curiosity of the Early Years. Daily Read Write Inc phonics develops early reading, writing and handwriting, while maths is taught in a practical, hands-on way through games, songs and problem-solving. Science and Humanities are woven naturally into everyday experiences, encouraging children to observe, question and make sense of the world around them.
Creative subjects, including art, music, dance and drama, are central to EYFS life, nurturing imagination, confidence and fine motor skills. French is introduced from Pre-School, and PSHE underpins all learning, supporting kindness, resilience, emotional understanding and positive relationships. Strong partnerships with parents, supported by regular communication and observations shared on Seesaw, ensure children leave Reception as confident, curious learners, ready to thrive in the next stage of their education.
Lower Prep (Forms I & 2)
In Lower Prep, pupils build strong academic foundations while maintaining their enthusiasm for learning. English lessons focus on developing confident readers and writers through daily Read Write Inc sessions, extended writing linked to exciting Humanities topics and, when ready, the Accelerated Reader scheme. Maths lessons emphasise core skills such as number bonds, times tables and problem-solving, using practical resources and games to support understanding.
Science becomes more structured, with pupils learning to plan investigations, make observations and use scientific vocabulary. Humanities are taught through an engaging rotation of History, Geography and Religious Education, helping children understand the past, explore the world and appreciate different beliefs and cultures. French continues in Lower Prep. Art, Design Technology, Music and Performing Arts encourage creativity and confidence, while PSHE helps pupils develop resilience, respect and awareness of the wider world.
Middle Prep (Forms 3 & 4)
Middle Prep offers a rich, connected curriculum that deepens understanding and encourages independence. English lessons link class readers closely with Humanities topics, helping pupils develop empathy, comprehension and a love of reading, alongside regular work on grammar, spelling, fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Maths builds fluency and reasoning through problem-solving sessions, mental maths and increasingly abstract thinking.
Science lessons take place in a specialist laboratory, where pupils explore Biology, Chemistry and Physics through practical investigations and real-world challenges. Humanities allow children to immerse themselves in historical periods, geographical enquiry and religious understanding, developing strong analytical and discussion skills. Language learning expands with continued French and the introduction of Spanish.
Specialist teaching in Art, Music and Performing Arts nurtures creativity and collaboration, while PSHE supports personal development, digital safety and responsible citizenship.
Upper Prep (Forms 5 & 6)
In Upper Prep, pupils are challenged academically while being prepared confidently for the transition to secondary school. English lessons continue to link literature, with Humanities topics encouraging critical thinking, mature writing and deeper historical understanding. Formal assessments support progress, and pupils are guided through national SATs in Form VI. Maths is taught by specialists, focusing on problem-solving strategies, mathematical language and resilience when tackling complex challenges.
Science is investigative and analytical, with pupils designing fair tests, using specialist equipment and presenting findings clearly. Humanities encourage sophisticated understanding of global issues, historical change and belief systems. Language learning in French and Spanish develops strong communication skills and cultural awareness. Creative subjects remain central, with high-quality opportunities in Art, Music and Performing Arts, including performances and exhibitions. PSHE ensures pupils leave as confident, respectful and compassionate individuals, ready to thrive in the wider world.
